What is the Budameru drain? | Munipalli akshay paul |

The Budameru drain, also known as Budameru Rivulet, is a significant waterway located in the NTR district of Andhra Pradesh, India. It originates near Mylavaram and flows towards Kolleru Lake, serving as a crucial drainage system for the region. Here are the key aspects of the Budameru drain:

Geographic and Physical Characteristics

Source: The Budameru rivulet begins in the hills surrounding Mylavaram and has a total length of approximately 162 kilometers (101 miles).
Mouth: It empties into Kolleru Lake, which is a vital wetland in the region.
Flow Capacity: The Budameru drain has a discharge capacity of 11,000 cubic feet per second (cusecs), and efforts are underway to enhance its capacity to manage floodwaters more effectively.
Historical Context

Budameru has a troubled history of flooding, often referred to as "The Sorrow of Vijayawada." The drain has been responsible for significant inundation of agricultural and residential areas, particularly during the monsoon season. In response to these challenges, a diversion channel known as the Budameru Diversion Channel (BDC) was constructed to redirect excess water into the Krishna River upstream of the Prakasam Barrage. This channel was designed to help mitigate flooding in the city.

Recent Flooding Events

In September 2024, Vijayawada experienced severe flooding due to heavy rains, which led to the Budameru rivulet overflowing. The flooding affected numerous residential areas, stranding over 2.7 lakh people and causing significant property damage. The floodwaters reached unprecedented levels, surpassing the typical maximum discharge, and highlighted the ongoing issues related to the management and maintenance of the Budameru drain.

Causes of Flooding

Several factors have contributed to the flooding associated with the Budameru drain:

Heavy Rainfall: Intense rainfall in the upper reaches of the NTR district and Khammam region has led to excessive inflows into the Budameru drain.
Poor Maintenance: The head regulator at Velagaleru, which is supposed to control the flow of water, has been poorly maintained, leading to ineffective flood management.
Encroachments: Rapid urbanization and illegal encroachments along the floodplain of Budameru have obstructed its natural flow, exacerbating flooding risks.
Inadequate Infrastructure: The existing infrastructure, including the Budameru Diversion Channel, has not been modernized to handle current flood conditions, leaving the area vulnerable to overflow.
The Budameru drain plays a critical role in the water management system of Vijayawada and the surrounding regions. However, its history of flooding and the challenges associated with maintenance and urban encroachment underscore the need for effective management strategies. Addressing these issues is essential to prevent future flooding and protect the communities dependent on this vital waterway.
